The honest rules of thumb
Replace when: the tank body leaks or is rusted through; a major part is obsolete or unavailable; or repairs keep stacking up on a unit past its expected life. Repair when: the tank body is sound and the fault is a single part — thermostat, element, anode, valve, igniter, or sensor. Decide with numbers when: the unit is old but sound, or the repair is large: compare the repair price against replacement, including the new unit's efficiency and remaining life, and choose with both figures in front of you. No rule replaces an on-site condition check.

Cost bands (planning only)
Small-part repairs sit in the lower band; larger parts and gas work sit in the mid band; full replacement sits in the large band and varies most with unit type, size, venting, and any gas-line or electrical upgrades. See our cost guide for the full breakdown. Nothing on this page is a quote.
