Water Heater Sizing Guide: Tank Size and Tankless Flow for Your Household

Sizing is demand math, not guesswork: count the simultaneous draws, then match the heater to them.

Tank sizing: gallons and first-hour rating

Tank size is usually quoted in gallons, but the number that matters is first-hour rating: how much hot water the tank can deliver in its first hour of heavy use. A household's peak hour — morning showers plus dishwasher, for example — should fit inside that rating with room to spare. A tank that is too small runs out at the worst moment; a tank far too large wastes energy keeping unused water hot.

Tankless sizing: flow rate and temperature rise

Tankless sizing is flow rate (gallons per minute) at a given temperature rise. The unit must heat your simultaneous flow — say, two showers — from winter inlet temperature to shower temperature. Clarksville's cold winter inlet water raises the required temperature rise, which lowers the flow a given unit can deliver. That is why a tankless unit sized for summer can disappoint in January, and why we size from winter inlet conditions.

Count simultaneous use, not bathrooms alone

Two bathrooms used at different times need less capacity than two bathrooms used at the same time every morning. Tell us your real pattern: how many people, how many simultaneous showers, any soaking tub, any high-demand fixtures. That pattern, not the bathroom count, sizes the heater.

Fuel and space constraints

Gas tankless units need adequate gas-line capacity and venting; hybrids need air volume and a condensate drain; large tanks need floor space and door clearance. Sizing that ignores those constraints produces a heater that cannot be installed as specified — we check them during the assessment.
